The PRO holds a variety of records for the Royal Navy in the late nineteenth and early early twentieth century, which includes the Great War. Service Records are available for those who served in the Royal Navy and for those who were in the Royal Naval Reserve. The Royal Navy’s Medal Roles are a further source of basic information about WWI sailors. The table on this page lists the name and number of sailors and indicates whether they were in the regular navy or the reserve. However you should be aware that “hostilities only” recruits joined the Royal Navy and not the RNR, which was an organisation comprising men who were sailors by occupation. Click on the bullet in the first column and this will link to more information about that individual.
