The letter codes for the Great War medals listed in the various service records are listed below.
||Service in France or Belgium between 5/8/1914 and 22/11/1914
||1914 Star and Clasp
||Service in France or Belgium between 5/8/1914 and 22/11/1914 under fire
||Service in any theatre of the war between 5/8/1914 and 31/12/1915 unless eligible for the 1914 Star.
||Service with a unit in a theatre of war between 5/8/1914 and 11/11/1918
||British War Medal
||Service in a theatre of war up to and including the official end of the war in 1920
Men who'd been in the armed forces from the first years of the war who receive the 1914 Star or the 1914/15 Star as appropriate plus both the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The set of three was sometimes referred to somewhat irreverently as Pip, Squeak & Wilfred after three contemporary cartoon characters.

Recipients of the 1914 Star
Two of the Sailorís listed were awarded the 1914 Star for Service with the Royal Naval Division. ADM171/131 gives a little bit more information about them.
